Silicon steel like mild steel, unoriented (NO) steel and grain oriented (GO) Si steel are known as electrical steel. NO Si steel is used in rotating machinery; GO Si steel is used in equipment (such as transformers) where the EMD is required to be parallel to the rolling direction. Go silicon steels are further subdivided into regular grain oriented (RGO) and highly permeable grain oriented (HGO) materials (Boll, 1994). The impetus for the development of Si steel was due to the substantial increase in the resistivity of Fe after the addition of Si (Figure 33(a)). Figure 33(b) shows the properties of Fe-Si steel as a function of Si content.
